What a wide collar actually does

The wider the collar, the more surface area spreads the pressure across your dog's neck. For large, strong dogs, or dogs that pull hard on the leash, that makes a real difference: a narrow collar concentrates force on a small patch of skin, while a wide one spreads that same force out. That's exactly why you see wider collars mostly on bigger breeds. It's not a coincidence, it's function.

And when is it simply a matter of taste?

For smaller or calmer dogs, that pressure-distribution argument matters much less. There, choosing wide becomes mostly a visual decision: a wider strap gives more room for color, pattern, and detail. What to watch for when going wider
