How to Care for a Leather Dog Collar

A leather dog collar only gets more beautiful with time – as long as you give it a little care.

Leather is a natural material that adapts to your dog's neck and becomes softer with use. Without proper care, however, it can dry out and become stiff.

The good news? Looking after a leather dog collar takes very little time. A few simple habits will keep it looking beautiful for years.

Why Leather Care Matters

A dog collar goes through a lot every day. Rain, mud, sand and daily walks all affect the leather.

Regular care keeps the leather soft, strong and comfortable for your dog while helping preserve its beautiful appearance.

How to Keep Your Leather Dog Collar Beautiful

After Wet or Muddy Walks

If the collar gets dirty, wipe it clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

If mud has dried, let it dry completely before gently brushing it off. This helps prevent rubbing dirt deeper into the leather.

Avoid harsh cleaning products, as they may damage the leather or affect its colour.

Let Wet Leather Dry Naturally

If your dog has been swimming or caught in the rain, allow the collar to dry naturally at room temperature.

Never place a leather collar on a radiator or in direct sunlight to speed up the drying process. Excessive heat can dry out the leather and make it brittle.

Condition the Leather

Every now and then, treat the leather with a quality leather balm or conditioner. This helps keep it supple and nourished.

Apply a thin layer with a soft cloth and allow it to absorb before using the collar again.

For most dogs, treating the leather a few times a year is sufficient. If your dog swims regularly or spends a lot of time outdoors in wet weather, you may wish to do this more often.

Check the Collar Regularly

While cleaning, inspect the collar for wear.

  • Are the stitches still secure?
  • Does the buckle work properly?
  • Is the D-ring still firmly attached?
  • Does the collar still fit correctly?

A well-maintained collar is not only more attractive but also safer.

What You Should Avoid

  • Machine washing the collar
  • Using harsh cleaning products
  • Leaving it soaking in water
  • Drying it on a radiator or in direct sunlight

Does Your Dog Love Swimming?

If your dog swims regularly, it's best to remove the leather collar beforehand whenever possible.

Salt water and prolonged exposure to moisture are not ideal for leather. If the collar does get wet, rinse it with clean water and allow it to dry naturally.

Leather Gets Better With Age

A high-quality leather dog collar develops a beautiful patina over time. Small signs of use and a rich natural shine give every collar its own unique character.

With just a little care, a handcrafted leather dog collar will remain a faithful companion on every adventure for many years.
