A standard-length leash is often ideal for everyday walks. In a busy environment, you may want your dog closer to you, while a little extra length can be lovely when there's more room to sniff and explore.

So there isn't one perfect leash length for every dog and every walk. Here's how to choose.

What length dog leash should you choose?

If you're looking for one leash for most everyday walks, around 1.5 metres is a great starting point. It gives your dog room to move comfortably while still making it easy to bring them closer when needed.

If you'd like more freedom as well as the option to change the length, a longer adjustable leash of 2.20 metres may suit you better.

So don't just think about your dog. Think about how and where you actually walk together.

The everyday dog leash

Our Classic rope leashes are 1.55 metres long. It's a length we find particularly practical for everyday use.

Your dog has enough room to walk comfortably beside or slightly ahead of you without creating too much distance. If you're crossing a road, passing another dog or entering a busy area, you can simply hold the leash a little shorter.

For your daily walk, a stroll through the park or a visit to a café, 1.55 metres is a practical all-round length.

When is a shorter leash useful?

More length doesn't automatically mean a better walk. There are plenty of situations where keeping your dog closer is simply more practical.

• In a busy shopping street
• When crossing a road
• At a market or event
• At a café or restaurant
• During training when you want more control
• When passing other dogs or cyclists

You don't necessarily need to buy a separate short leash for these moments. You can temporarily hold a standard leash shorter, while an adjustable leash can be changed to suit the situation.

Shorter isn't automatically better. The right length depends on the moment.

When should you choose a longer, adjustable leash?

On a relaxed walk, a little extra freedom can make all the difference. Our Extra Long leashes are 2.20 metres long and adjustable, giving your dog more room to sniff and explore while allowing you to shorten the leash when things get busier.

The difference between 1.55 and 2.20 metres may not sound huge on paper, but those extra 65 centimetres are surprisingly noticeable when you're out walking.

The adjustable Extra Long is particularly useful if your walks vary. One moment you might be walking along a busy street and want your dog close; the next you're in the woods or dunes with plenty of space to give them more freedom.

It's important to note that a 2.20-metre leash isn't the same as a true long training or tracking line of 5 or 10 metres. That's not what it's designed for. Think of it as a flexible everyday option that lets you switch easily between more control and more freedom.

Length and material: what feels best?

Length is only part of the decision. The material makes just as much difference to how a leash feels when you're walking.

A leather dog leash feels different in your hand from a rope leash. Leather becomes softer with use and develops its own character over time. Rope is lightweight and flexible, making it a comfortable choice for everyday walks. An adjustable leash adds the flexibility of changing the length to suit the situation.

Consider your dog's size and weight too

A larger dog doesn't automatically need a shorter leash. Large dogs can be perfectly comfortable walking on a longer leash too.

What matters is choosing a leash that's suitable for your dog's size and strength.

Both sizes of our Classic rope leash are 1.55 metres long. The difference is in the thickness: size S is 1 cm thick and intended for smaller dogs, while size L is a sturdier 1.4 cm for larger dogs.

So don't look at length alone. Consider the whole picture: length, material, thickness and your dog.

Which leash length is right for you and your dog?
