Welke maat heeft mijn hond? (En waarom je NOOIT de oude halsband moet meten!)

What size does my dog need? (And why you should NEVER measure the old collar!)

Nothing kills the vibe like waiting for your stunning DWAM collar, only to find it’s too big when it arrives. The number 1 reason for returns? Measuring the old collar.

At Dog with a Mission, we work with unique sizing and handmade leather. This requires a specific way of measuring. In this blog, we explain exactly how to get it right the first time.

💛 The Golden Rule: NEVER measure your old collar

Let’s start with the biggest mistake. Many people lay their old collar flat on the table and measure it. Please, don't do this.

  • Flat vs. Round: A collar lying flat on a table has a different length than when it’s fastened around a neck.

  • Different Brands: A size 'M' from another brand might be an 'L' with us.

  • The Result: If you measure the old collar, you will almost always order a size too big.

📏 How to measure correctly (In 3 steps)

Forget what you’re used to. Grab a flexible tape measure and your dog.

1. The right spot Have your dog stand or sit calmly. Place the tape measure around the neck, exactly where the collar would normally sit.

2. Measure TIGHT against the skin This is crucial: Pull the tape measure so it fits tightly around the neck. Do not put fingers between the tape and the neck and do not measure "loosely".

  • Why? Our leather collars form to the neck and will always stretch slightly with use. If you measure too loosely now, the collar will end up being much too large.

3. Check the Chart Read the exact number of centimeters. This is the neck circumference. Find these centimeters in our size chart on the product page.

⚠️ In between two sizes?

Does your dog’s neck size fall exactly between two sizes? (For example: you measure 33 cm and are doubting between size S and M).

Always choose the SMALLER size.

People tend to choose a size bigger "just to be safe" (like with clothes), but with leather collars, that’s a mistake.

  • Leather is alive: Over time, the saddle leather becomes more supple and slightly roomier.

  • Fit: A collar that is too big will rotate, 'swim' around the neck, and look less stylish.

  • Conclusion: On the edge? Size down, not up!

💡 No tape measure at home?

Don’t have a flexible tape measure? No problem.

  1. Use a phone charger cable or a piece of string.

  2. Wrap the cable tightly around the neck.

  3. Place your thumb on the spot where the cable crosses.

  4. Lay the cable next to a ruler or stiff tape measure to see the centimeters.
